Leonard Joseph Hersel, 65, of Scobey, Montana died at home on August 2, 2018. He was born to Martha (Dighans) and Edwin Hersel on May 11, 1953. Martha often told the story of walking through snow to the Scobey hospital for his delivery.

Leonard was Martha and Ed’s third child. He attended Butte Creek School north of Peerless before finishing his schooling and graduating from the Peerless High School in 1971. Leonard had many stories of the old high school which was demolished after his graduation.

After graduating, Leonard farmed and ranched in the Peerless and Richland areas. He married Linda Tong on December 28, 1972. Leonard and Linda had three sons: Dennis, Jonathon, and Neil.

Leonard was vice president of the Montana Gelbvieh Association. The president was Ray Hill who lived south of Raynesford; Leonard and many friends went elk hunting at Ray’s.

After more than 20 years farming and ranching, Leonard started working construction. He ended his working career as a heavy equipment operator in North Dakota, Montana and on the western pipelines.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Linda, of Scobey and sons: Dennis (Carrie) of Ponte Vedra, FL; Jon (Ashley) of Daphne, AL; and Neil (Jenn) of Lake Tapps, WA. The greatest loves of Leonard’s life were his grandchildren: Emma, Scarlett, Brynn, Brennan, and Brix. He is also survived by his sister Aquina (Garry), his brothers Andy (Marge) and Bernhard as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be 10:00 Tuesday morning, August 7, at the Scobey Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Landeraan officiating. Interment will follow at the Daniels County Cemetery in Scobey.
