TIOGA, N.D. - Oliver Hersel, 86, of Tioga, passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at the Mountrail Bethel Home in Stanley.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the First Lutheran Church in Tioga. Pastor Chris Montgomery will officiate and interment will follow at the United Cemetery in Tioga.
Oliver was born on June 5, 1915, to Ole and Inga (Skiri) Hersel on the Hersel homestead, southeast of Tioga in Pleasant Valley Township, Williams County. He attended rural school at the Nylander School. As a young man, he worked on the farm with his two brothers and father. He also occasionally worked for other farmers.
Following the death of his father in 1940, Oliver and his brother, Alvin, took over the family farm, raising grains and beef cattle. After Alvin's death in 1985, Oliver continued to farm until 1997. His sons, Jon and Dean, continue to operate the farm. Oliver also drove school bus for the Tioga School District for more than 21 years.
On Jan. l, 1954, Oliver was united in marriage with Joanna Bekkedal at St. Paul, Minn. They lived in Tioga these succeeding years until Oliver entered the Mountrail Bethel Home in Stanley in November 2000.
Oliver enjoyed boxing, horses, farming and watching the horses pastured at the farm.
He is survived by his wife, Joanna of Tioga; two sons: Dean, his special friend, Patty Lux, and daughter, Samantha; and Jon, his wife, Paulette, and their daughters, Alissa, Kylie and Chelsea, all of Tioga; two daughters: Kristine Polsfut and her husband, Arlin, of Mandan and Anne Hersel of Helena, Mont.; two brothers, Edwin Hersel and his wife, Martha, of Billings, Mont., and Elwood Hersel and his wife, Betty, of Emmett, Idaho; two sisters, Gladys Quale and her husband, Albert, of Williston and Clara Odegaard of Kirkland, Wash.; numerous nieces and nephews, with special mention of Bernice Gotta of Bellevue, Wash., who lived with Oliver and Joanna during her senior year of high school and also, LeAnn Hersel who spent many days with Oliver and his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Joseph and Alvin.
Friends may call until 7 p.m. today from 10 a.m. until noon Tuesday at the Fulkerson Funeral Home in Tioga and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.
