O. H. Frojen Passed Away
Passed Away Last Wednesday after a Prolonged Period of Illness
After an illness of almost a year's duration Mr. O. H. Frojen passed away at
his home near Finley, Wednesday evening, August 25. The lingering disease
which finally brought death was cancer of the stomach. This sickness has
developed gradually during the year, and although Mr. Frojen was spared from
suffering severe pain his strength little by little left him, and the last
three months he was confined to his bed.
Olai Hanson Frojen was born at Froien, Sondfjord, Norway, on the 28th day of
July 1859. At the age of 21 he entered the fire department at Bergen,
Norway and served there for seven years. He was married at Bergen Nov. 2,
1884, to Miss Marianne Holm. In 1889 he came to America and for a short
time stayed with his brother, Christ Frojen at Oakes, N. Dak., after which
he moved to Duluth, Minn. Here he lived for two years and again moved to
Oakes, where he took up farming and resided until moving to Finley in 1910.
At this place he has also been engaged in farming, having bought a half
section of land when moving here.
Mr. Frojen was a highly respected man in this community, because of his
honesty and uprightness in all his dealings. He was kind-hearted and
helpful to his fellow men, peace-loving and always considerate of the
interests of others. It can be said of him that he was a sincere Christian,
not only professing Christianity, but living it. During his prolonged
illness he was patient and lived in glad expectation of going home to his
Lord and Savior when his days on earth should be numbered.
For a number of years after coming to Finley he was a member of the Ebenezer
Lutheran Free Church of this place, but in 1919 affiliated with the
Oestervold Lutheran Church of which he has since been a faithful member and
has served as deacon. Until failing health prevented him he was a regular
attendant at all the services and meeting of the church, including those of
the young people in whose welfare he was deeply interested. He will be
greatly missed in his home, in the congregation and in the community.
Shortly before his death, Mr. Frojen made several contributions in money to
various missions and charitable institutions, a Christian example worthy of
emulation.
The funeral services were held Friday August 27 at the house and at the
church and were conducted by Rev. V. E. Boe, who spoke on John 17:24, Mrs.
Gertrude Boe-Overby san "Rock of Ages" (in Norwegian) one of Mr. Frojen's
favorite hymns, and "In Heaven Above." After the service the body was laid
to rest in the Oestervold church cemetery.
Among the many who attended the funeral and who had come a long distance
were the following relatives and friends: Sister, Mrs. M. Bakken of Valley
City, N. Dak.; twin brother, Christ Frojen and daughters, Boletha and Alma,
of Oakes; brother, John Frojen of Glover, N.Dak.; Rasmus Welk of Oakes; Mr.
and Mrs. John Olson and Mrs. Grimsrud of Litchville, N. Dak.
Besides the above named sister and brothers the deceased is survived by his
wife and 7 children. They are Hans, Portland, Oregon; Berger, Davenport, N.
Dak.; Minnie, Alfred and Ovidia, Finley; Bennie, Jamestown, N. Dak.; and
Laura, now Mrs. Walter E. Swift, Aberdeen, Wash. Mrs. Swift has been
staying with her parents several months during the illness of her father,
returning to her home in Washington after the funeral. Two children, Harold
and Arthur, died in infancy and three brothers, Henry Frojen of Litchville,
N. Dak.; Rev. L. H. Frojen, also of LItchville, and George Froje of
Cogswell, N. Dak., have preceded the now deceased Mr. Frojen in death.
Blessed by the memory of O. H. Frojen.
