Avanell Marie Jacobson was born on June 24, 1930, in Watertown, SD. She was the daughter of Gustave and Theresa (Ronke) Marquardt. She grew up on the family farm near Florence, SD. Avanell attended country school through the eighth grade, and graduated from Watertown High School.

Avanell met her husband, Eugene Willard Jacobson, on a blind date. They were united in marriage on June 19, 1951 in Florence, SD. Together they farmed northeast of Ortonville and upon retirement, they moved to Ortonville.

Avanell was a faithful and long-time member of St. John’s Catholic Church and was active with the ladies circle and Bowl of Love. Avanell always enjoyed sharing afternoon coffee with friends. She was an avid walker and loved to garden, raising vegetables and flowers. She enjoyed embroidering dish towels and giving them as gifts. She was a Minnesota Twins fan and loved to read anything by Louis L’Amour. Cooking and baking for family was her passion, and she will always be remembered for her “famous” O’Henry and SpongeBob Bars. Most importantly, Avanell treasured time spent with her family and friends.
