Funeral services for Evangeline “Vangie” Lillehaug, age 83, of Lemmon, SD, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at the PRINCE OF PEACE CHAPEL OF THE EVANSON JENSEN FUNERAL HOME in Lemmon, SD. Pastor Mary Peterson will officiate with burial in the Prince of Peace Cemetery north of Lemmon, SD.

Evangeline “Vangie” Lillehaug, 83, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019.

Vangie was born in McLaughlin, SD on April 15, 1936 to Edward and Susan (Schell) Stugelmeyer. She was the oldest of four children. When she was nine years old her father passed away. She spent many of her childhood years on her Grandparents farm north of McLaughlin.

On January 8, 1955 Vangie was united in marriage to Kenneth Lillehaug at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon and to this union three children were born. The family made their home in North Lemmon.

When her children reached school age Vangie started working at Wheeler Manufacturing and continued to work there for many years. She was very active in her children's activities at church, Scouts, and school. You could always find her crocheting, crafting, decorating cakes for family and special occasions (including many weddings), making porcelain dolls, and quilting in later years. She spent many enjoyable hours tending her flower beds and yard work keeping Ken busy with projects that made their yard so fun to be in. Vangie was also a life-time member of the Legion Auxiliary.

In January 1981 Ken and Vangie moved to Lodi, California. They enjoyed being with many of Vangie's relatives and friends from the Dakota area and also exploring the state on many road trips. She waitress-ed at the food counter in Woolworths and LaVern's Coffee Shop. She held many memories with the special friendships she developed during this time.

Music was a big part of Vangie's life starting at an early age with her father and her family. Singing in church and playing many instruments—all by ear—however her accordion was the instrument of choice. While in California she played in a band with her Uncle Johnny of which many were polkas. Dancing became a favorite activity with their friends and they shared many enjoyable evenings together.

Family meant everything to Vangie and she was affectionately called Nana by her grandchildren and their friends. Their home was always bustling with activity especially while their grandchildren were attending school and they enjoyed every minute of it. She was known for her knoephla soup for many years at her grandchildren's church fund raisers and German dishes were a mainstay at family get-togethers. Nana started to write down recipes later in life only because her granddaughters asked, otherwise she cooked with a little of this or that. Cream and butter were a main ingredient.

Signs of dementia for the past six years started to take its toll with Vangie spending the past eleven months at the Good Samaritan Society Home in Mott, ND. Her family is forever grateful for the care she received there. She was known for her smile and one of our cherished memories is when she danced on her 83rd birthday while listening to one of her polka tunes.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her children: Kenneth D. (Vikki) Lillehaug, Jr.; Sharon (Dan) Anderson and Sheila (Don) Klein; grandchildren: Danci (Bryce) Baker; Danika (Kevin) Schmidt; Dantae Anderson; Danessa Anderson; Sterling (Carrie) Klein; Shayla Klein; and Shelby Klein: great-grandchildren: Cody and Blake Schmidt; Quinn and Rylan Baker; and Trenton Klein.; siblings: brothers, Delbert and Julius Stugelmeyer and a sister, Darlene (Freeman) Paquet; nieces: Mariah (Jim) Tolly and Yolanda Paquet; and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Vangie was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth; her parents; niece, Susan Paquet and nephew, Jay Stugelmeyer.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by a friends and family service at 7:00 p.m. all on Friday, November 29, 2019 at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.
