On March 31st, 2014 Vernon Rudolph Lee passed away from the effects of advanced age.
Vernon was born on July 15th, 1925 in Seattle, Washington, the second of 5 children born to Matt Lee and Emma Angleshaug Lee. He attended school in a one room schoolhouse and following graduation he was drafted into the service in WWII serving from 1943 until 1945 with the Army Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant. He served with honor as an engineer/waist gunner on a B-24 in the Pacific Theatre.
Upon returning home from the service, Vernon went to school to obtain his journeyman’s license for carpentry, and on July 22nd 1946 he married the love of his life, Violet Pickett. After briefly living in Seattle, they purchased their home in Downey in 1949.
Vernon worked with R&W Construction from 1946-1960 before starting his own company, Vernon Lee Construction. In 1964 he also became a construction superintendent with Reichert & Son before retiring in 1987.
Vernon had a passion for woodworking and remodeled his home in Downey as well as a beach house he and Violet purchased in Encinitas, CA in 1967. He could build almost anything made out of wood, and amongst many of his creations, he built countless birdhouses that still adorn both of his homes today. Vernon also enjoyed gardening and spending his time at their Encinitas home working in the large yard, tending to their plants, trees and shrubs. It was always easy to find Vernon because all you had to do was go into the garage where he could always be found working on a project with a cup of incredibly strong coffee. Vernon was also very proud of his Norwegian heritage.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 68 years, Violet Lee of Downey, CA. He is also survived by his five children: Michael (Jean) Lee of Placentia, CA; Bill (Steve) Lee of Desert Hot Springs, CA; Ann (Jerry) Millard of Downey, CA; April (Mark) Detterich of Downey, CA; and Thomas (Donna) Lee of Desert Hot Springs, CA. He is survived by 8 grandchildren: Chris (Theresa) Lee, Jason (Jody) Lee, Candis Lee, Justin Lee, Samuel Millard, Matthew Millard, Daniel Detterich, and Erin Lee. Vernon is also survived by his great grandson Connor Lee and his sister in laws Clineene Smith of Woodinville, WA and Wilma Lee of Bothell, WA. Vernon had a large extended family and will be deeply missed by his numerous nieces and nephews with whom he was very close.
He was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Wallace Lee, Doris Moss, Dale Lee and Arlene Lee.
