Jergen Soma was born January 9, 1931, to Torger and Inga (Njaa) Soma of Cooperstown, ND. He died Monday, May 27, 2019, at Cooperstown Medical Center Hospital. He grew up attending Shepard School and Cooperstown School. He began farming with his father, taking over the family farm in 1955. He continued farming full time until 2000.
Jergen met the love of his life, Beverly Kloster of Sharon, ND, and married her October 25, 1952. They had 66 years together. They had two children, Kathy and Tim. Tim followed in his father’s footsteps, taking over the farm.
Jergen and Bev enjoyed going on Canadian fishing excursions as a family, travelling to Texas in their later years, and enjoying being a “go for” guy on the farm. Jergen enjoyed target shooting, hunting geese and prairie dogs, riding motorcycle, and taking rides to “check the crops,” hearing the field planting and harvesting updates.
As a young man, Jergen was active in the Civil Air Patrol, rising to the rank of second lieutenant. He served on the Shepard Elevator Board, Farmers Oil Board, Bald Hill Township Board, and was a member of Fort Atchison Rifle Club.
Jergen is survived by his children, Kathy and husband, Tom Gawronski and Tim and wife Deb Soma, all of Cooperstown; two grandchildren; four great-grandsons; sisters, Peggy (Angela Andrist) of Egan, MN, Kaarin (Toufik Bouzino) of Crosby, TX, and Karla Rislov of Badger, MN; brother, David of Mandan, ND; brothers-in-law, Sully (Linda) Kloster of Sharon, ND, and Jim (Karen) Kloster, of Mesa, AZ, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly; his parents; sister, Georgine and husband Earl Lynnes; brother-in-law, Larry Rislov; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Kitty and Ardean Nelson, and niece Paula Jacobson.
Services were Tuesday, June 4, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown, ND. Interment was in Westley Cemetery, rural Cooperstown, ND.
